Amanda - enhanced by avalaris

AMANDA stands for "Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver". Originally it started as a project at the University of Maryland. By now this multi-functional backup solution is continually being enhanced by a worldwide community.

Amanda is free software, that is open source, which has the advantage that no license fees are incurred. Properly set up the program provides the user with a cost-effective and reliable alternative to commercial software. Therefore avalaris has further enhanced this backup solution and implemented new functions.

The node where everything converges in Amanda is the backup server. It saves the data of all other computers within the network. According to requirements the backups are stored on a magnetic tape or on the server's hard disc. For purposes of extended automation so-called tape-changers can be used without problems.

Initially, Amanda was only intended for UNIX operating systems (Linux, BSD, AIX, etc.), in the meantime it is increasingly used with Windows- and Apple Mac-OS-X-clients. Hence, a wide range of operating systems can be integrated into the backup-solution.

We at avalaris have added several useful features to Amanda, to maximize comfort and usability. Typically, backups are started once a day automatically by the server - usually during nighttime. Of course this option is still available within our enhanced product.

A novel option is to automatically initiate a backup on shutdown of the client. Thus, clients don't have to be operable permanently to guarantee regular backups. This enhances the life-expectancy of the used processors and helps save energy costs. Should the client be needed during backup, the process can be discontinued anytime.

Furthermore Amanda offers numerous setup-possibilities to meet all requirements: number of tapes, intervals between backups, as well as the directories for saving can be defined. Furthermore data can be saved either uncompressed or space-saving in compressed form.

The handling of large amounts of data requires backup systems you can count on unconditionally.

Play it save with avalaris' enhanced version of Amanda!
